Eugene State Office Building Wins Innovation Award

The State of Oregon’s Eugene State Office Building won an AIA Innovation Award for its sensitive adaptation of a forty-year-old office building for contemporary use. The jury, consisting of Laura Hartman, AIA and Robert Hull, FAIA, awarded the project for creative and selective editing of a building with many merits in need of rediscovery. The project uses updated solar control and an innovative activve chilled beam HVAC system to save 30 percent over baseline on energy costs. Aesthetically, the opening up and refinement of a 1960’s era sun screen has granted its occupants an external view and returned to the city an active building face so long veiled.
